Website design departments are growing at a rapid pace in today's corporations. Teams of project managers, ecommerce developers, marketing managers, creative and governance teams are created to effectively manage the design and maintenance of websites. But who is at the helm when it comes to 'good web design' and is 'good web design' still a concern in today's marketplace?
Good web design can start with, but not end with, a template. Templates are pre-packaged web design tools that enable developers to quickly add content, branding and imagery in order to build a website for an individual or a company. Many customers are not a fan of templates because they will probably see their design on another website in a different color! This will make many feel as if their brand appears to have been created in a cookie-cutter fashion.
Good web design involves understanding a company's goals and developing a solution that is custom tailored to meet their needs whether they be acquiring new customers, retaining current customers or driving additional revenue throught the online channel. It also involves a wholistic approach to identify the customers engagement strategy, social media strategy, and also developing a strategy for SEO (search engine optimization).
Design is definitely a behavior and not a department in that a design should be created with the website goals and the end user experience in mind.
